After an exciting beginning to our first competitive season in 2020, we are ready to finish what we started. In 2022, Zephyrus Drum & Bugle Corps will take the field for the first time. With four years of growth and practice behind us, Zephyrus Arts Institute is committed to offering life-long memories through an intense, educational experience with an exceptional staff. The final result will be high-energy performances both locally and in Drum Corps International competitive venues. Zephyrus Drum & Bugle Corps will be the new SoundSport competitor from Zephyrus Arts Institute as we begin our journey to becoming a DCI Open Class devision corps.
WHAT IS DRUM CORPS?
Drum Corps is a high-energy sport of the arts for performers (Brass, Percussion, and Color Guard) age 15-22 who want to push harder than ever, and perform for passionate fans! First time viewers note its similarity to competitive marching band, but at a much higher difficulty level. The average day for a drum corps is to wake up on a gym floor (with a nice comfy air mattress or sleeping pad), eat breakfast, stretch, work out, and rehearse until lunch, rehearse again until dinner, and unless there’s a performance or travel, rehearse some more until the end of the day, punctuated by a snack, a shower, and a strict lights out for a good night’s sleep. That process repeats every day until the show, a musical and visual showcase of skill and artistry, is ready for competition!
WHY Should I audition for Zephyrus?
First of all, we’re here to have fun. Performing in a drum corps should not be a thankless, grueling battle. When you step on the field to perform, our only goal is that you have the time of your life. That means an exciting show, friendly staff, helpful critique, and a corps-wide support system to bring each member to their highest potential.
What do I need to Know ahead of time?
In your audition packet (available upon registration), you will find warmups and audition materials for the 2022 Zephyrus Drum & Bugle Corps. If you wish to be considered for a spot, please come to your audition prepared to play all attached music. Memorization is not required, but a basic understanding is key to getting the most out of your time with the staff.
Audition clinics are a great opportunity to learn in a new environment with fresh sets of eyes and ears. While we do not wish to override the technique you’ve been taught at your home program, you may be given new feedback and tips to add to your toolbelt. The Zephyrus musical ensemble will be trained under our specific visual and musical technique to match tone, quality, and style.

What to know:
Summer Plans:
2022 will be the official first season of the Zephyrus Drum & Bugle Corps. After organizing the Zephyrus Marching Academy in 2018 and 2019, it was our ambition to compete at three DCI shows in 2020. Now that DCI is returning to full operation, we wish to execute a tour similar to this in 2022. We will announce our final schedule in the Spring, including travel details and exact dates. We do not guarantee a specific tour until arrangements are made, but commit to providing the most fun possible to all who join. Members and parents will be kept informed about our plans as they are finalized.
Other opportunities:
As a member of the Zephyrus Drum & Bugle Corps, you may be invited to perform locally in the off season. These performances are optional but can be a lot of fun! Also, as a DCI SoundSport ensemble, our members can compete in the performer showcase (I&E) in Indianapolis!

Checklist for auditions:
- Arrive on time with required documents signed by your guardian (or yourself if you are over 18) These documents are now available HERE.
- Eat a healthy meal before arrival, as we will not be providing food at the afternoon clinics in December and January.
- Wear athletic clothing and bring a water bottle.
- Print off and bring your audition packet with a pencil for note-taking.
- If you have questions, let us know! Send an email to [email protected] and we’ll forward it to the appropriate staff member!
- Invite your friends to come along! Having friends around to share notes and work together can make the audition experience even more fun!
What to know:
- You belong here! Whatever you do, don’t worry about “being ready” for drum corps. If you are driven and open to instruction, our staff will help you achieve your goals!
- Commitments: We expect corps members to attend all rehearsals unless a specific exception is granted. We will have a weekend rehearsal in the spring and a 3-4 week season from late June to mid July. This will involve moving in and staying with the corps 24/7 until the end of the season, similar to a regular drum corps (see above)! Dates to be announced.
- Finances: We are proud to provide an excellent experience at a low cost compared to the activity average. Once tuition for the 2022 season is announced, all members will be provided with individual scholarship accounts where you can fundraise to lower your tuition even further!
- Conduct: While we want you to have an amazing experience, we expect you to represent yourself, each other, and Zephyrus Arts Institute in a positive and professional manner. Please make yourself familiar with our policies and code of conduct, available at Zephyrusarts.org/policies.
